I know that things can really get rough,
When you go it alone.
Don’t go thinking you gotta be tough,
And bleed like a stone.
Could be there’s nothing else in our lives so critical,
As this little home.Well, this would be a simple song,
To say what you’ve done.
I told you ’bout all those fears,
And away they did run.
You sure must be strong.~The Shins: Simple Song
It’s been one week and 5 days since Jason returned from Afghanistan. It’s been just over 2 weeks since I packed up my world in Raleigh and came to the coast with boxes, essentials, our clothes, a couch and a dog. Since my social postings on the topic went rather dark since his return, many of you have chastised me lovingly for an update. So how are we doing, you ask? Are we adjusting? Is he adjusting? Are you happy? Having sex like rabbits? Any turmoil? Complete bliss? Any regrets?
How are we doing? I could probably compose a complicated answer and make us sound more erratic and interesting…but in all reality, its been rather simple. That’s not to say we haven’t had some learnings, or should I say that I have had more than a few learnings. I literally just asked the hot man next to me if there have been any surprises or epiphanies, and he said “No…It’s really been so easy falling into sync with you. And I most appreciate you interrupting my morning routine. Actually I appreciate BOTH you ladies mixing up my morning.” Just to clarify, the ladies in mention are me and the corgi. Two crazy blondes. One wants to dance party at 4am, while the other is keenly adept at providing coffee, conversation and a tad bit of skin 2 hours later.
Things are good. Things are more than good. I’m learning I don’t have to go it alone and I don’t have to be as strong as I often think I need to. There’s someone next to me when things are fantastic, there’s someone sleeping near when I’m sick. There’s’ a navigator in the passenger seat, there’s a partner in the kitchen. There’s the man I adore willing to be awoken when I’m suffering from insomnia. And may I add…4am insomnia is surprisingly great fun with a willing participant.
We are about to move again. Next week we finally move into “our” place. It’s beautiful, it’s downtown, it’s 2000 square feet of urban perfection for us, a 10-year-old, a dog or two, and lots and lots of company. Come invade our simple song. We’ll be happy and ready.
