Halfway Around is All the Way For Me

Listen, see I was meant to be a warrior
Fight something amongst me, leave here victorious
Classroom of kids, or a venue performing
If I’d had done for the money I’d have been a fucking lawyer

Concrete, vagabond, man telling stories
Humbled by the road, I’m realizing I’m not important
See life’s a beautiful struggle, I record it
Hope it helps you maneuvering through yours, and…

~Macklemore & Ryan Lewis: Make the Money

I am an all-or-nothing girl. I like it big, honest, and right in front of me. I don’t like guessing games, I appreciate purposeful pain, and I rarely, if ever, half-ass things.

Surprise, surprise, that sometimes halfway around is the right way around. Sometimes halfway around is all the way for me. Halfway around is what’s helping me reach my goals, do great things, and be a better person.  Time doesn’t always let us do everything we want to do, so that’s when you change the time. Or as one heck of a prolific lyricist reminds me daily, “Change the game; don’t let the game change you”. Here’s where halfway is more than all the way.

  1. Nike Women’s 1/2 Marathon is in less than 30 days – I could probably do a full marathon; I don’t WANT to do a full marathon. I don’t want to invest in the time it takes to train for one, run one, or recover from one. Instead, I think of a HALF as one hell of a milestone, a kickass workout, and an emotional victory. I feel an immense amount of gratitude and pride when I finish 13.1 miles. More importantly, I feel honored to do it on behalf of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I may not be raising money this Spring for the LLS, but I can sure as hell put some miles on my body for them. #WeRunDC
  2. The 2013 Man & Woman of the Year campaign is at the 1/2 way point – this too is all for the LLS. These candidates aren’t doing anything easy, and the HALFway point usually raises great relief and an equal amount of fear. You can now see the finish line, yet there is still so much you want to do before then.  I was in their shoes a couple of years ago and I thank them. Halfway there, halfway around! All the candidates are amazing, but I do have to throw it to Christina Coffey  and Quincy Pedew. Help a Man, Woman, boy and girl out by raising money, donating money, or just giving them a much-needed shout-out.
  3. A 30 minute Power Cycle class (1/2 of what is standard) – this is all for me and the body, mind, and spirit I strive for. Trust me, HALF with Jolie at Cycle City four times a week is more ass-kicking than a 60 minute ride will ever be. And there is simply no excuse here. Yes, I am sore. Yes, I am tired. Yes, I have work and deadlines. But hell yes, I CAN DO ANYTHING FOR 30 MINUTES.

Make the money; don’t let the money make you
Change the game; don’t let the game change you
I’ll forever remain faithful
All my people stay true

Halfway is all the way, if half is all you have to give. Halfway is all the way, if it provides the time you need to fulfill a purpose. Change it up. Make it yours. 13.1, $30 or 30 minutes. Change the game; don’t let the game change you.

  1. I like. 🙂 Half is mentally, physically, and psychologically healthier than ‘all or nothing’, which used to be my perfectionist credo. “Half” lets you have more of what you want, in smaller doses – half a scoop of ice cream, half a pint of beer, a half-hour hanging with a friend (versus setting an expectation that a real conversation has to take much longer, or it’s not worth doing).

    • You summed it up perfectly! Half is certainly a learning jouney for me and one that I constantly ‘HALF’ to be reminded of. I love your correlation back to expectations and worth…very insightful dear girl!
