As an ode to Throwback Thursdays, I’ve decided to reblog monumental posts from the same time-frame of prior years. As I was digging through them for the inaugural May 1st reblog, I was reminded of a very sad Spring 5 years ago…
On March 10, 2009 Iona was diagnosed with cancer. For the next month, terms like thyroid nuclear scans, right jugular furrow, carcinoma, adenoma, and contralateral gland suppression became my vernacular. (Interestingly enough, this is also the time I realized my first marriage was in major jeopardy, as I escorted Iona to every doctor visit..alone.) After an agonizing series of tests and surgery, I was finally able to bring her home on April 8th, 2009; she was tumor-less. It’s been 5 years that she’s been cancer-free. That is worthy of a celebration.

Pretty girl now looks like she tangled with a sharp set of garden shears. Her incision is much bigger than I expected it to be. Truthfully though, it could wrap around her entire body if that’s how they needed to get the tumor out.
